Then they fried & ate it
Shōji Tsuchiya, the animation production staff runner (watch Animation Runner Kuromi or Shirobako to see what that means) for The Summer Hikaru Died anime episode 2, reported on Sunday about a job requirement that neither Kuromi nor Shirobako‘s Aoi ever had: the staff prepared marinated chicken for that scene in that episode — and then fried and ate it together. Tsuchiya further explained this was the first time he personally filmed live-action model footage, so he had fun. Tsuchiya posted a photo of the marinated-turned-fried karaage chicken:

Animator Mitsuhiro Oosako subsequently responded to Tsuchiya’s photo of the chicken, saying, “It was really good!”
The specific episode 2 shot Tsuchiya is referencing takes place around the 15:52 minute mark of the episode. In the scene, the character Yoshiki Tsujinaka puts his hand inside Hikaru’s chest and describes Hikaru’s innards as feeling cold like marinated chicken.
The Summer Hikaru Died anime adapts Mokumokuren‘s manga of the same name. The anime series premiered on July 5 in Japan and is currently available on Netflix worldwide.
